Water supply
Contributing to safe and secure water production at water purification plants with separation membrane modules across Japan
Application of separation membranes in water purification plants
Over time, membrane separation technology has matured at water purification plants in Japan. In the 1990s, the technology was highly evaluated for its ability to physically remove Cryptosporidium, leading to its adoption at various water purification plants. Since then, the performance and efficiency of membrane separation technology have continued to improve. Nowadays, separation membranes are important elements in water treatment.
On the other hand, the consolidation and closing down of water purification plants in Japan continues due to a declining population. In particular, water purification plants in depopulated areas and mountainous areas make it difficult to integrate them into large-scale water purification plants in neighboring areas. Thus, there is a growing need for small-scale simple water-supply systems suitable for such areas. Hollow fiber UF membranes (ultrafiltration membranes) used for drinking water treatment are compact and easy to maintain, and are particularly suitable for simple water-supply systems.
Hollow fiber cellulose acetate membrane modules suitable for water supply
UF membranes that use cellulose acetate (CA) made by Daicel Corporation as a raw material are a naturally-derived, safe, highly hydrophilic product. By adopting CA membranes for hollow fiber membrane modules designed for easy maintenance, stable operation in water purification plants can be realized.
Cellulose acetate membranes
- ● Excellent hydrophilicity and high water permeability
- ● Resistant to contamination and less likely to lose performance
- ● Safety derived from nature (free from fluorine compounds)
- ● Biodegradable and environmentally friendly materials
Its performance is unlikely to deteriorate due to recovery by cleaning. Accordingly, it can be used for a long time
Hollow fiber membrane module
- ● Easy-to-clean structure
- ● Resistant to contamination with cross flow filtration
- ● Highly integrated and compact
- ● Easy adjustment of the treatment capacity by changing the number of modules
Application examples

Portable simple water-supply systems for small-scale communities
- ● Space saving compared to conventional sand filtration
- ● Membrane modules removable and transportable for cleaning
This system is well-suited for locations with limited space for water supply, such as mountainous areas where large-scale infrastructure is not feasible
Reliability and extensive track record of success
